The definitive beginner-to-advanced guide to the Bangladesh Civil Service exam — from circular to cadre.
🏆
The Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) is the most prestigious competitive examination in Bangladesh — and for most aspirants, the most misunderstood. Hundreds of thousands apply each cycle without fully understanding how the three-stage exam works, what each stage tests, and what strategic decisions must be made before sitting the first paper. This guide fixes all of that.

🎯 The Three BCS Stages — What Each Tests
Stage 1
Preliminary MCQ — 200 marks, 200 questions, 2 hours. Negative marking: −0.50 per wrong answer. Tests breadth of knowledge across 10 subjects. Cut-off is not fixed — it varies by exam and quota. Typically 50–55% of the marks (100–110 out of 200) qualifies for the written stage. Only the top candidates proceed — usually around 15,000 from 300,000+ applicants.
Stage 2
Written Examination — 900 marks, six compulsory papers. Duration: 3–4 hours per paper over several days. Entirely essay and long-answer based. Pass mark is 50% per paper — failing any paper disqualifies the candidate. This stage tests depth: analytical writing, structured argument and subject mastery in both Bangla and English.
Stage 3
Viva Voce — 200 marks, 25–40 minutes per candidate. Conducted by a PSC board of 5–7 senior officials. Evaluates: intellectual depth, communication skills, personality and leadership potential. Cadre allocation is determined by combined written + viva score. There is no pass/fail mark for viva — every mark counts toward the final ranking.
⚠
Critical rule most candidates miss: In the written exam, you must score at least 50% in every individual paper. A brilliant overall total cannot compensate for a failing score in one paper. Candidates have lost their BCS career by neglecting a single subject — most commonly Mathematics or English Literature.
📅 BCS Exam Timeline — From Circular to Cadre
Circular Published
BPSC publishes the circular on bpsc.gov.bd. Application window: typically 3–4 weeks. Apply online immediately — do not wait for the deadline. Pay the application fee via Teletalk.
Preliminary Exam (3–6 months after circular)
200 MCQ questions, 2 hours. Admit card downloaded from bpsc.gov.bd 7–10 days before exam. Result published 2–4 weeks after exam — usually a list of roll numbers who qualified.
Written Exam (3–6 months after prelim result)
Exam held over multiple days — one paper per day, typically 2–3 days per week for 2–3 weeks. Results take 6–12 months. This waiting period is normal — use it to begin viva preparation.
Viva (3–6 months after written result)
Date and roll numbers published by BPSC. Viva conducted at BPSC building, Agargaon, Dhaka. The entire process — circular to cadre allocation — typically takes 2.5 to 4 years.
Cadre Allocation & Gazette
Final merit list published. Candidates allocated to cadres based on combined written + viva score and cadre preferences submitted. Gazette notification officially confirms appointment.
🌟 Smart Application Strategy
📋 Apply to Multiple BCS Cycles
Most successful candidates attempt BCS 2–4 times. Each attempt builds familiarity with the exam format and question patterns. Never view a single BCS as your only chance.
📚 Start Prep Before the Circular
BCS circulars are published irregularly. Begin preparation now. Candidates who start 12 months before the exam consistently outperform those who start after the circular.
🎯 Choose Cadre Preference Strategically
List cadres in order of genuine preference, not prestige alone. Cadre allocation depends on your final score — put your realistic safety choices in positions 3–5.
📄 Prepare Documents Early
All certificates (SSC, HSC, Honours, Masters) must be attested. NID, passport photos and freedom fighter certificate (if applicable) must be ready before the application window opens.
