🧠 Intellectual Depth
Can you analyse issues, not just state facts? The board gives highest marks to candidates who demonstrate critical thinking — connecting current events to constitutional principles or policy frameworks.
💬 Communication Skills
Clarity, confidence and precision in Bangla and English. You do not need to be eloquent — you need to be clear, direct and free of verbal fillers like "actually" or long pauses.
🌟 Personality and Character
Integrity, calmness under pressure and leadership potential. The board may provoke you — test whether you stay composed, respectful and principled.
📚 Subject Knowledge
Deep knowledge of your academic background, your district, Bangladesh's current affairs and your preferred cadre. Generalist knowledge across BCS syllabus topics.
📋 Most Frequently Asked BCS Viva Topics
Self
Introduce yourself, your family background, your district. Prepare a 90-second self-introduction covering: name, district, academic background, most significant achievement, why you want BCS. Practise until it sounds natural and confident.
Cadre Choice
"Why did you choose [X] cadre?" This is asked in almost every viva. Have a specific, personal and credible answer. Avoid generic replies. Connect your cadre choice to a personal experience, career goal or Bangladesh's development need.
Your District
Know your district thoroughly. Major rivers, historical events, freedom fighters, industries, notable persons, current MP, recent development projects. The board almost always asks at least 2–3 questions about your home district.
Current Affairs
Last 6 months of major news. National: budget, economic indicators, major government projects. International: UN resolutions, bilateral relations with India/China/USA, climate agreements and Rohingya crisis updates.
Academic Subject
Deep questions from your undergraduate major. If you studied Economics, expect GDP, inflation, monetary policy questions. If Engineering, technical fundamentals. Revise your undergraduate core subjects — the board uses your transcript.
✍ The "I Don't Know" Rule
If you do not know the answer to a question, say clearly: "Sir/Madam, I am not certain about this — may I share my reasoning based on what I do know?" Then offer your best analytical response. Never guess or fabricate. The board respects intellectual honesty far more than a confident wrong answer.

Week 1: Know Yourself
Prepare your self-introduction, cadre preference answer, academic background responses and district-specific knowledge. Write everything down and practise aloud daily.
Week 2: Current Affairs Sprint
Read one quality newspaper per day. Summarise top 5 national and international stories daily. Build a running notes document on Bangladesh economic indicators, govt projects and foreign policy updates.
Week 3: Mock Viva Sessions
Conduct 3 mock viva sessions per week with a senior candidate, teacher or study group. Get harsh feedback. Focus on: eye contact, posture, avoiding filler words and structuring answers in 60–90 seconds.
Week 4: Polish and Confidence
Dress rehearsal — formal clothes, board room simulation. Review all weak areas identified in mock sessions. Read success stories from previous BCS viva candidates to build mental confidence.
